Chad Smith

Intellectual Property Strategist


Chad Smith is HMLG’s intellectual property strategist. Chad has 20 years of experience in intellectual property law and is a former Trademark Examining Attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office—giving him a unique understanding of trademark prosecution. He has successfully procured and prosecuted trademarks for leading U.S. corporations, including opposition and cancellation proceedings before the United States Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. In addition to his work at HMLG, Chad is an adjunct professor at the University of Washington and Seattle University, serves as the Supervising Attorney for the University of Washington Trademark Clinic, and he speaks at various conferences and events.

Fun facts

  • Staying young at heart, Chad participates in the Puget Sound Senior Baseball League.
  • He doesn’t own a car! As an avid motorcyclist, two wheels is his preferred mode of transportation.
  • As many of us in the Pacific Northwest do, Chad loves the water, he surfs and is a certified scuba diver.
  • In traveling the world, some of his favorite trips have been Costa Rica, Brazil, Switzerland, and Hong Kong. Although, riding across the US on a motorcycle is up there as well.
  • Bucket list trip: Japan, New Zealand, Vietnam, Chile, and Iceland.

Chad earned degrees in Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics from the University of Minnesota, Institute of Technology and a J.D. from William Mitchell College of Law (St. Paul, MN) with an emphasis in Intellectual Property Studies.
