Joleen Hughes
Founder and CEO
Joleen Winther Hughes is the founder and CEO of Hughes Media Law Group, where she helps creators, founders, and companies stabilize their businesses, protect their assets, and amplify growth with control intact.
She’s the author of Stabilize. Protect. Amplify., a widely regarded legal and business playbook for entrepreneurs and creators seeking long-term success, ownership preservation, and strategic leverage.
Unlike many attorneys, Joleen began her career in the real world rather than inside a traditional law firm. She ran an artist management company during Seattle’s iconic 1990s music scene, negotiated high-pressure deals, booked shows, and learned early how creative careers grow or collapse.
Before founding Hughes Media Law Group, Joleen served as Senior Counsel for a pioneering media technology company operating at the forefront of streaming media and digital content delivery. Her work during this period helped shape modern legal and business models for digital distribution and established her reputation as a lawyer who understands how innovation, risk, and revenue intersect.
For nearly two decades, Joleen has advised clients across gaming, technology, consumer products, media, and entertainment. Her work spans entity formation, operations, fundraising, licensing, strategic partnerships, risk management, and growth planning. Clients value her direct, collaborative approach and her ability to function as part of the leadership team rather than an external commentator.
Joleen’s legal perspective is grounded in real-world experience, not theory. Beyond advising clients, she has built, operated, and exited multiple businesses, including co-owning and selling two successful Irish pubs. She serves as CEO of a publishing company and BVUSA, a specialty notebook and stationery business, giving her firsthand insight into consumer products, brand development, operations, and scale.
Her commitment to creative communities extends well beyond client work. Joleen previously served as Music Commissioner for the City of Seattle and as a board member of Seattle International Film Festival, contributing time and leadership in support of artists, filmmakers, and creative entrepreneurs. She is the host of The Lawyer Who Rocks, with a highly anticipated relaunch planned for 2026.
In a parallel career few expect, Joleen owns a publishing company and is a best-selling romance author (using a pen name, she might tell you if you ask). This dual perspective provides rare insight into author careers, publishing contracts, intellectual property protection, licensing strategy, and the evolving risks facing writers across indie, traditional, and hybrid publishing models.
Together, these experiences shape a legal practice rooted in business reality, creative empathy, and strategic clarity, offering clients guidance informed by lived experience rather than abstract theory.
